About the Prize

Designed and produced by Dr Natalie McDonagh, Open mind, Open heart is an arts-based tool to aid mind and heart in self-inquiry and taking considered, confident action. For example: reflecting on practice situations; gaining insight into the true essence of a project; having a challenging conversation; contemplating a tricky situation; improving a relationship; reshaping your work in the world, and so on.

Open mind, Open heart is grounded in sound neuro-aesthetics, how the arts positively and holistically engage the brain and body, and Natalie's direct experience in designing and delivering leadership and organisational development programs.

About Dr Natalie McDonagh

Natalie McDonagh is a practising designer, maker, curator and writer. Her Artfulmind practice is dedicated to making enriching, self-reflexive spaces in which people can meet themselves. This may be the personal space activated when an individual uses Open mind, Open heart for self-inquiry. It may be a large-scale, immersive, physical art installation occupying a building.

Whatever form the space takes, its nature is always invitational, an invitation to meet your mind in some way; to yield, to receive something of what is being offered and, perhaps, unfold.

Natalie's professional experience includes 20 years coaching facilitators on their presence and performance with clients, as well as designing and producing custom-made thinking tools and learning materials. Her experience also includes working directly with organisational clients who recognised arts-based methods and tools are required for genuine cultural change in the complex matter of recognising bias and improving gender equity, diversity and inclusion.

Natalie's pioneering design practice and doctoral research, conducted across RMIT School of Management and School of Art and Design, prove the capacity of creative arts methods to engage aspects of the mind not accessible through traditional approaches to learning and development. Where conventional methods are successful at rearranging our mental furniture, arts-based modes can reshape our mental architecture, opening it to greater vistas.
