About this item
"Sitting Room Treehouse" by Paul Maher
Oil on canvas
62cm x 55cm
RRP $1300
I was inspired by the gnarly angophora trees high up on a ridgeline, overlooking Boomerang Beach and my daughter having breakfast with the morning sun coming through the trees. Through improvised mark-making in wet paint, I tried to capture the organic, twisted boughs and the energy of the ocean beyond.
About the Artist
Paul Maher has been making and exhibiting art for 30 years in Australia and overseas. Raised in the Hunter Valley, Maher trained in Visual Arts at the University of Newcastle, completing postgraduate studies in 1985. At a time of rigorous studio teaching and with the benefit of a dynamic group of artist-peers, Maher developed a strong drawing habit that stayed with him, though his loyalty to paper is happily relaxed. His energetic iPad drawings are evidence of his interest in all forms of mark-making. He has exhibited in the Hunter since 1988, punctuated by two exhibitions in Paris in 1999 and University of Newcastle Gallery 2017. Following the 1989 earthquake Maher’s work was included in Shifting Grounds at the Art Gallery of NSW. Represented in the Newcastle Art Gallery collection, his mosaics form part of the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery Sculpture Garden and feature on Beaumont Street, Hamilton.
