Pair of Emeco Fancy Chairs by Salty Labs (Jonsara Ruth)
About this item
Studio: Salty Labs
Principal Designer: Jonsara Ruth
Description: The original aluminum navy chairs were created by the Electric Machine and Equipment Company (EMECO) for navy ships in 1944 during WW2. With the addition of simple upholstery, the aluminum chairs became suitable for office furniture. They were adorned with cutting edge materials of the day: vinyl cushion covers, polyurethane foam, cast synthetic rubber armrests, and a polyurethane sealer on the aluminum. We stripped away the deteriorating unhealthy foam and vinyl fabric and sandblasted the yellowed polyurethane surface from the aluminum frame and steel seat to reveal the natural color of the metals. Handknotted wool and silk rug samples saved from the waste stream were cut to follow the curves of each seat.
