Encaustic means "to burn in" with wax and dates back to ancient Greece. This technique is combined with photography to create an archival work of art. Patterson combines calligraphic handwriting superimposed over silhouettes and the haunting face of a woman staring back towards the viewer.

Christine Patterson has been long regarded as an Alternative and mixed media photographer. She is a self-taught photographer and focused for years on developing film and prints in the darkroom. Her love for years was her work with infrared film and the art of hand-tinting. The introduction of the digital era allowed for a more layered expression to her communication in the arts and she began experimenting with new mediums, such as image transfers on wood and paper, pigment ink print on rice paper on wood with resin and encaustic to name a few. In each of the works, which are layered with material and emotion, she incorporates a sense of recognition mixed with the surreal. The images are a reflection of her life, a visual diary interpreting life’s events. The subtly of the work evolves in the hopes of evoking memories, hopes, desires, questions, and a story – one that builds in each viewers imagination.

Christine is featured in many public and private collections. She was the featured Bicentennial Photographer in 1996 and was showcased at the Tennessee State Museum, sponsored by Cracker Barrel. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Tennessee State Museum, the Tennessee Governor’s Mansion, The Hunter Museum, The Knoxville Museum and Knoxville Convention Center to name a few. She, also, has been collected by The First Bank, Jim and Janet Ayres Collection in Nashville, Independent Bank, Sun Trust bank, Tennessee Insurance Service, Knoxville Orthopedic, Maryville College, Morgan Keegan and many more. https://christinepattersonfineart.com/
