"I prefer bias plaiting with copper. The copper naturally poses challenges to the fingertips not experienced with more traditional weaving materials. It does, however, offer resarding sculptural and surface treatment possibilities."
While traditional basketry techniques are used in Saunder's work, the results are far from traditional. Her vessels are intended to be more sculptural than functional. This exquisite copper basket was created with bias plaited copper with pinwheel and copper bead surgace embellishments. The copper shines with opalescent hues from every angle. Also included with this remarkable copper basket is a hand-signed, hardcover text, Plaited Basketry with Birch Bark by Vadimir Yarish, Flo Hoppe, Jim Widess.
Judith Saunders creates contemporary baskets and live in Virginia. She explains the pivotal role that two of her teachers, Shereen and David LaPlantz, played in the development of her weaving. “I signed up for a class with David called’ Cold Connection sin Metals’ I was teaching a jewelry class in a room with no ventilation, and, for health reasons, needed alternatives to soldering. I needed another class and signed up Shereen’s plaited basketry class. I really had no idea what distinguished plaiting from other forms of basketry. I was lucky to have worked with both David and Shereen and to see the possibility of overlapping metals and weaving in my work.”
While Judith loves the effect she can achieve with copper, she finds it easier to work with more pliable materials. She has most enjoyed plaiting with different kinds of paper.
