Johanna Paas creates mixed media works that balance between recognizable imagery and abstraction. Her works include traditional printmaking techniques such as silkscreen and intaglio in combination with materials such as gouache, wax, resin, watercolor, and graphite. "Accumulations II" demonstrates Paas' style with a field of neutral, non-objective layered shapes on the left two-thirds of the piece, juxtaposed with an abstract object floating in a rusty-red field on the right. Sky-blue swirls and ochre planes come together to form what might be Pandora's Box opening in a dramatic and beautiful canvas.
Johanna Paas received her BFA from the University of Michigan and MFA from Louisiana State University. Working with a variety of printing methods and materials, Pass creates mixed media prints that balance between recognizable imagery and abstraction. She is a 1997-1998 Arrowmont Artist-in-Residence. She was awarded Best in Show: Mary Beth Cregier National Juried Exhibition, and Faculty Excellence Exhibition Award from Central Michigan State, where she is currently assistant professor of printmaking.
