Buie Hancock, owner and artist behind Buie Pottery in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, draws on her Smoky Mountain home as inspiration for this ceramic piece. Purple mountains frame a central waterfall, surrounded by native animal life including a fox, elk, turtle, rabbit, and three-dimensional trout bursting from the water. The entire composition is crowned by a black bear whose fur is spangled with a crescent moon and stars. Hang this bright, cheerful piece home and be reminded of the beauty and fun of the Smokies.
Buie Hancock has been creating colorful, functional and decorative handmade pottery since 1982. She began throwing pottery at age 17 and has been having fun “slinging mud” ever since. She attended the University of Tennessee where she graduated with a BFA with honors in 1986. She started her own business and gallery, Buie Pottery, in September of 1986. She has been president of the historic Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community (the United States’ largest concentration of artisans and craftspeople since 1941), a member of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce, and has served on various committees and councils for her city and community.
