About the artist: Patricia Prentice was the daughter of engineer Roy Prentice, whose brother, George, designed Brisbane City Hall (along with Francis Hall of Hall and Prentice). She studied under William Bustard at the Central Technical College, and during World War Two, worked as a cipher clerk for the Royal Australian Navy in Brisbane. In 1948, Prentice travelled to London to study at the Byam Shaw School of Art, and in England met and married barrister Brian Target. This began a 30-year period away from Australia, first in East Africa, where Target was Attorney-General in Zanzibar and Tanganyika (a former African state, now forming the mainland of Tanzania), then in Sussex in England. In 1986, the couple returned to Australia, first to Toowoomba, then to Sandgate, and in 1989, she published A Place to Paint about her many studios around the world.
