Framed Archival Photographic Print

Image 500 x 330 mm Frame 630 x 480 mm

Image made in August 2023 by veteran photographer and lifetime lover of the Victorian Alps, Bruce Rigby. Fine art print on museum grade Canson Baryta 310 gsm paper. High quality hardwood frame.

The scene is a moonlit landscape under a star studded sky near Johnston's Hut situated in a valley close to Mount Nelse in August 2023. In an average year in decades past this scene would have been fully snow covered. Although there are occasional bumper years, the snow cover generally is less and disappears earlier than in the past. Snow gums face dual threats of more frequent and intense fires, and expanding dieback caused by bark destroying larva the longicorn beetle. Both are believed to be the result of human induced climate change. Coordinated efforts by researchers, citizen scientists and landuse managers are required ensure the Alpine bio-region is protected from runaway decline with flow on impacts to water security and cultural heritage. A recent meeting of researchers, traditional custodians , land managers and interested citizens was an important step towards action in support of the previous alpine environment. https://www.melbournefoe.org.au/snow_gum_declaration_urges_action
