Carl Abrahams (1911–2005) was a Jamaican master painter known for his distinctive style and significant contributions to Caribbean art. Largely self-taught, he began his artistic career as an illustrator and cartoonist before transitioning to fine art. His work, often characterized by vibrant colors and surreal, religious, and historical themes, played a crucial role in shaping Jamaican visual culture.

Abrahams gained recognition when noted British artist Augustus John praised his talent during a visit to Jamaica in the 1930s. He later became a key figure in the island’s art scene, influencing generations of Jamaican artists. His paintings frequently depicted biblical scenes, Jamaican folklore, and social commentary, blending realism with expressive and symbolic elements.

Throughout his career, Abrahams received numerous accolades, and his work has been featured in major exhibitions both locally and internationally. He is regarded as one of Jamaica’s most important painters, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire Caribbean art.

Gene Pearson (1946–2018) was a renowned Jamaican ceramist and sculptor, celebrated for his distinctive clay and bronze works that reflected African and pre-Columbian influences. His art often featured striking, minimalist forms, particularly in his signature busts, masks, and vessels. Inspired by Jamaica’s rich cultural heritage and Rastafarianism, Pearson’s pieces embodied a deep spiritual and historical essence.

A graduate of the Jamaica School of Art (now part of the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts), Pearson studied under master ceramist Cecil Baugh. His work gained international acclaim, with exhibitions in the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe. Pearson’s ceramics are known for their smooth, elegant finishes and bold, geometric designs, often in earthy tones.

Beyond ceramics, he also worked in bronze and was instrumental in elevating Jamaican pottery to a global level. His contributions to Caribbean art earned him significant recognition, and his works remain highly valued by collectors and institutions worldwide.
