Texas Founding Father, Lorenzo de Zavala, wrote two books in his lifetime. This was the first - a history of the revolutions in Mexico from 1808 to 1830. It was first published by a New York publishing house (Palmer) in 1831 (volume one) and 1832 (volume two) while Zavala was in exile from Mexico. It was printed in limited quantities, then printed again with both volumes bound together, in Mexico in 1845. This is a copy of the first Mexican edition.

Condition report:

Quarter leather and paper over boards. Significant wear to corners and board edges, as shown in photos. Front hinge is starting at the top, rendering the inner hinge tender, but the binding remains secure. From the library of 19th century Mexican academic Florentino Diaz Mercado, with his personal library stamps on title page. He excised something from the title page, which I presume to be a previous owner's stamp or inscription. Bookworm damage present in the last quarter of the text, but doesn't render the text unreadable.

Why It Matters:

This important work is rare in any condition and represents the scholarship of one of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence studying the revolutions and unrest in Mexico. Not long after this was written, he would abandon hope for a Federalist government in Mexico and throw in with the Texians for the cause of independence.
