In 1841, when Kennedy first published his history of the Republic, it was thought to be the best work of its kind. The Republic of Texas Congress even passed a resolution thanking him for it. Kennedy also planned to settle 600 families south of the Nueces River. His plan never came to fruition but his work lives on. Kennedy's original publication also included a map by John Arrowsmith, then considered the most useful map of Texas to date, as it was the first to contain data provided by the General Land Office. This copy reproduces the Arrowsmith map. This volume also contains a large fold-out map of the original empresario grants.

Condition report:

Publisher's original binding shows wear at board and spine edges. Some foxing to preliminaries, otherwise text is clean. 939pp. Arrowsmith map shows some tears at/near folds with no loss of paper. These could be readily repaired on the verso with archival repair tape. Empresario map is very good showing little wear.

Why It Matters:

Kennedy's history was hailed in the Republic as a fine work that included contemporary accounts of the early days of Texas. The Arrowsmith map is a detailed look at early Texas. The first edition is painfully expensive and rare. This second edition is scarce in any condition.
