In 1852, newlywed Mrs. Hardinge came to Texas to secure some land she'd inherited from her brother. While she was here, she visited Houston, Austin, Seguin and other points along the Guadalupe. Fortunately for us, Sarah was a self-taught painter and illustrated her journal with depictions of what she saw. In 1988, nineteen of her watercolors were exhibited at the Amon Carter Museum. This book, with commentary by Ron Tyler, was produced to mark the occasion.

Condition report:

Hardcover, paper over boards, with cloth spine and paper title label. Covers show little visible wear. 76 pages.

Why It Matters:

The works of Mrs. Hardinge give us candid and early full-color views of Central Texas. The softcover edition is scarce but the hardcover is rarely seen roaming free on the rare book market.
