The earliest history focused on the Brownsville area. The author was an assistant agent for the Morgan Steamship Company at Port Isabel and a seaman on the U.S.S. Rio Bravo during its brief career on the Rio Grande. In 1882 he moved to Indianola. Later in the 1880s Pierce moved to Dallas to work as a business-college instructor and court reporter. He began contributing articles about Mexico and South Texas to Texas newspapers and magazines. In 1904 he moved with his family to Brownsville. There he practiced law, organized and operated the Rio Grande Valley Abstract Company, and became a genealogist. In writing this book, he interviewed with longtime residents of the Brownsville area. The book also contains a chapter on the Texas Rangers and outlawry along the Mexican border, as well as additional material on the Mexican War.

Tan cloth covers are well worn. Binding is split at rear hinge but all signatures remain securely bound. 200 pages with fold-out maps.
