What is Books for Vaccines?
Books For Vaccines is a volunteer-run charity auction to raise money for Care International, who in turn are raising funds to help vaccinate the world against the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID pandemic has hit us all hard, but there is no denying that certain countries have been harder hit than others. Until we are all vaccinated, the world will not be free from the pandemic and people will continue to suffer. The aim of this auction is to raise money to help Care International to vaccinate the world (not just the UK).
More information on Care International and what they do can be found on their website.
What Can I Donate?
We are looking for donations from the publishing industry - book bundles, signed copies, editorial critiques, one-to-ones for aspiring writers, pieces of writing, virtual author visits, mentoring - whatever you have the time and space to donate as long as it is book-related. You can donate more than one item if you would like to, but even one is greatly appreciated. We are looking for donations from any part of the book world.
Why Is This Needed?
The publishing industry is a generous and supportive place and we know there are a lot of people who wish they could do more to help with the vaccination roll-out. This will hopefully be a small way of doing so, and of keeping sight of the fact that just because the UK situation is improving does not mean everywhere is - we must not forget about the countries who are struggling with the pandemic and who do not have the amazing access to vaccines that we have here.
How Does It Work?
If you would like to bid on an item, you can do so from 8am on May 7th 2021 by clicking on the auction item and entering the amount. If you would like to donate an item, you can do so now by adding it to our google spreadsheet or by getting in touch via the button at the bottom of this page. Alternatively you can reach out to me on Twitter @Phoebe_A_Morgan and DM me your donation details.
How Do I Bid?
Find an auction item (or more!) you like the look of in our Auction Lots (below).
The auction will be live from May 7th to May 21st, 2021. To place a bid, leave your bid (in GBP) on the item you’re bidding on. We can only accept bids made in GBP; no other currency will be accepted.
You will have to connect with your Facebook or Google account to make your bid, or enter your details to make an account for this site (your email will not show in public on the website). The email address you provide is the email address we will contact you on if you are the highest bidder at the time the auction closes.
If you are outbid, you can increase your bid. We advise keeping an eye on any items you’re bidding on, so you’ll know if you’ve been outbid. You will be emailed with a summary of your bids once the auction closes.
The auction will close at 11:59pm GMT on Friday May 21 and at that time, the highest bid received will be the winner. Bids received after the deadline will not be accepted.
*Please note, this auction is UK shipping only for the physical prizes - Zoom calls and mentoring plus online critiques are open internationally*
What Happens If I Win?
We’ll confirm your win with you via the email address you used to make your bid, and then ask you to donate your pledge amount to Care International via our Just Giving Page. Please do not pay before we’ve confirmed by email that you are the winning bidder. Any payments made in error cannot be returned. When you make your payment, please clearly state your name and the lot number you are paying for. All payments must be made by midnight on 31st May 2021.
You’ll then need to send confirmation of your payment to us, and we’ll pass your contact details on to the lot donor, who will be in touch to arrange for your item to be sent to you or emailed to you. If you have any queries or run into any problems just get in touch.
Will you store my details?
No, all details will be collected for the purposes of putting the winning bidder in touch with the auction donator only. They will not be stored after the auction is over and will not be used for any other purpose.
Inspirations
This auction is inspired by the amazing Books To Nourish auction run by Sarah Shaffi and her team in 2020, which you can also donate to here. Her auction in turn was inspired by the Authors For Grenfell Tower auction.
