Full-day DNA Sampling Field Trip + Lunch in National Park with Expert Scientists
About this item
A full-day DNA sampling field trip + lunch in one of Sydney’s National Parks with a team of expert scientists.
Join Prof. Maurizio Rossetto, Head of the Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience at the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, and his team of world-leading conservation scientists for a full-day adventure collecting DNA samples through one of Sydney’s breathtaking national parks.
On your day out in the field, you’ll step into the shoes of a plant conservation scientist as you learn how by sampling leaf material and analysing their DNA, we can develop management strategies that will protect Australia’s biodiversity for generations to come. You’ll see first-hand how RECER’s pioneering work underpins the protection of threatened species, supports the recovery of fire-affected landscapes, and shapes global conservation practices. Between fieldwork sessions, pause for a relaxed lunch in the bush, taking in the remarkable landscapes these scientists work tirelessly to preserve.
This rare, immersive experience offers an insider’s view into the science powering real-world environmental solutions, from understanding plant resilience to witnessing high-tech equipment used on the frontlines of conservation.
On your day out in the field, you’ll learn:
-
How scientists identify priority species and determine how to sample representative DNA collections
-
The specialised techniques used to analyse DNA
-
How ecological data, location mapping and field notes are recorded for long-term research and conservation
-
How plant resilience is measured and why this matters for future climate scenarios
-
Why understanding about the distribution of diversity is crucial for safeguarding threatened species and restoring damaged ecosystems
-
RECER’s innovative approaches to overcoming challenges like habitat loss, climate change and biodiversity decline
-
The journey a leaf sample takes after collection, from field to lab, testing, and, ultimately providing applied guidance to resilient restoration projects
