ess Merlin is an ex-police officer and author. Her novella, Red Dirt Blue Lights, is an historical fiction which tells of her time as a policewoman in the 1970s and the prevailing, disturbing divide between Police and Indigenous people.

Tess published her autobiographical novel, Rank, in 2023. In Rank she weaves her personal story as one of the state's early policewomen, in a boys’ club environment, into a compelling fictional story. She is keen to continue writing stories that touch on difficult topics, and to continue to bring meaningful stories to readers. She is currently writing her third novel.
