About Ruby Bateman

Ruby Bateman is a visual artist, working and living in Hackney, London. Her work is often self-referential, (re)depicting and translating imagery across different materials and processes: her sculptures appearing in her paintings, her paintings appearing in her drawings, and so forth. Ruby investigates her personal and political identification with 'the mother' and (institutionalised) motherhood with a richly colourful and symbolic visual language, referencing her own fiction. By exploring her ambivalence for motherhood, which love and loss has led her to desire, she continues to develop a deeper maternal consciousness

Ruby graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2020 with a Print Master’s, and was awarded a First BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Printmaking by The University of Brighton in 2017. She has exhibited in shows across the UK and online and worked with social-political arts causes such as Birth Rites Collection, Big Arts Herstory Project (BHAPS) and Energy Garden. Recent exhibitions include ‘Dream On: London-Based Artists Explore The Liminal Space Between Fantasy And Reality’ Grove Collective 2021, ‘My Love Is Your Love’ with Everywoman Biennial, 2021, ‘Domesticity and The Feminine’ 2021 curated by Joséphine-May Bailey and ‘Acedia’ 2021 with Purslane Gallery. She was shortlisted for the Birth Rites Collection New Works 2020 and HIGH Award 2020 and is particularly interested in collaborating and exhibiting with artists, galleries and organisations concerned with maternity and gender.
