About this item
LEAH FRASER
What might have been and what has been IX
watercolour, ink and acrylic on French artisan paper
45 x 37.5 cm (framed)
The otherworldly paintings of Sydney-based artist Leah Fraser form an ocular poetry. Each work is a lyrical stanza narrating the mysteries of existence across history and mythology. Moving through liminal realms, ethereal beings coalesce with a dense bounty of flora and fauna in silent symbiosis. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW, Fraser was granted an Art Production Residency in Arquetopia, Puebla Mexico (2012) and has regularly exhibited throughout Australia in solo and group shows. The artist has also been a finalist in a number of awards, including the Blake Prize for Religious Art (2014 & 2009) and the Moreton Bay Art Prize (2016).
Leah Fraser has chosen to donate 100% of the proceeds from this work to Empower Firesticks Practitioners To Restore Cultural Fire.
The Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Corporation (Firesticks) provides leadership, advocacy and action to protect, conserve and enhance cultural and natural values of people and Country through Cultural Fire, land restoration and wellbeing practices. Since the decline in Indigenous cultural fire and land stewardship there has been significant and increasingly negative impacts to Country through inappropriate fire regimes and mismanagement of Country. This has led to declines and extinction of culturally significant species, habitats and places, along with the increasing extreme high intensity wildfires that impact communities and the environment. Firesticks is ready to deliver an Indigenous led Cultural Fire program to support affected communities and countries to heal after the devastating fire crisis.
