Pastel Blues and Pink and Yellow, The Yellow Room
About this item
My muse is turning my love of the familial, more specifically, the maternal, into material in my practice. Recalling memories is an intergenerational process because they are usually collective remembrances of the past. I trust my understanding and value phone calls with my mother, who supplies me with narratives of past generations. In this pastel drawing of my Nana’s living room, the place in which generations of family gatherings occurred, I turn ghost-like remnants of the past into tangible samples of themselves. Pastel Blues and Pink and Yellow (The Yellow Room) is a continuation of my interest in domestic spaces, as extensions of self-expression is a concept I visit often in the studio. For my mother, my grandmothers, and maternal great grandmother, the home is the space upon which each bestows their personal aesthetics, maintaining their aesthetic governance within the home. The embellishing of these spaces is a material expression of my maternal lineages; as an artist, such is the venture point of my work.
