Gala Jane "Serif"
About this item
Emerging artist, Gala Jane is based in Lismore, on Bundjalung country, in regional NSW where she has been honing her sign writing and text skills for the past several years whilst studying. Graduating with a Bachelor of Art and Design from Southern Cross University in 2020 she has been welcomed into the arts community of the Northern Rivers. Her practice is focused on text, often in combination with found objects, photography, craft and sign writing where she shines a light on mental health, sexism and the gender imbalance that is prevalent in Australia. She was awarded the 2020 SCU Graduate Prize from the Northern Rivers Community Gallery for her infamous bra cup face mask self-portraits that exposed the gender inequality and sexism that she experiences everyday.
The serif is often overlooked and under-appreciated, it hangs onto the edges of letters to increase ease of reading, yet we often don’t acknowledge its existence. "Serif" (2021) is an appreciation of its hard work. This work shows a large scale letter S falling off the edge of the work. Is it the start of a word that we cannot see or is it an object in its own right? Using traditional sign painting techniques, Gala has created depth, shadow and beauty out of something mundane that we see everyday.
