About this item

Tony Albert, Vintage playing cards, beads, unique Tony (wrecking ball) bead, L 8.5cm, W 8.5cm, D 8.5cm.

Tony Albert (Girramay/Yidinji/Kuku-Yalanji) is a contemporary Aboriginal artist celebrated for his bold exploration of how First Nations peoples have been culturally mis/represented.

He is a long-time supporter of Aboriginal Art Co, providing auction works, buying artwork, promoting the organisation and being a mentor to emerging artists both formally and informally through our gallery and residency program.

Tony’s bauble combines cut-out playing cards in hexagon shapes, accented with his recognisable “Aboriginalalia” imagery. A beaded thread holding an enamel wrecking-ball charm is visible through the open hexagons. His broader practice interrogates the systems that define and mediate Aboriginal art, reshaping these conversations into powerful statements of cultural strength and identity.

Widely recognised as a leading ambassador for Indigenous culture, Tony has been named Artistic Director of the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial: After The Rain, is the first First Nations Curatorial Fellow at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, and the first Indigenous Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He has also received an Honorary Doctorate from Griffith University.

Tony Albert is represented by Sullivan+Strumph.
