About this item

Cholena Drew Hughes, hand-made lomandra string, raffia, natural dyes, wild clay, L 8.5cm, W 5.5cm, D 5cm.

Cholena Hughs (Koa descendant) was born on Turrbal Country, grew up on Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) Country, and now lives on Jinibara Country. She has studied extensively at both TAFE and university, developing a diverse visual arts practice across many mediums and processes. Cholena facilitated cyanotype workshops at Aboriginal Art Co last year.

Cholena’s work reflects her deep connection to Country. She spends time in the bush and along the creek near her home, observing and listening to her surroundings. These experiences inspire her art, allowing viewers to sense the intimacy and significance of her relationship with the environment.

Her bauble is made using clay from the creek on Jinibara Country where she lives. She has also created hand-made string from lomandra grass, woven together with raffia that has been naturally dyed using gum leaves and iron mordant. The materials and techniques in this piece are a gesture of respect and connection to the Country she calls home.
