About this item

Gordon Hookey, Acrylic paint on paper mache bauble, resin coating, L 8cm, W 8cm, D 8cm.

Gordon Hookey is a Waanyi artist born in Cloncurry and now based in Meanjin (Brisbane). His practice sits at the meeting point between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cultures, known for its bold visual language and sharp political satire.

For this fundraiser, Gordon’s bauble features his signature kangaroo wearing Aboriginal flag sunglasses, paired with his trademark witty text and commentary, alongside the Palestine flag. Check our socials or get in touch to see the full artwork.

Gordon has been a long time supporter of Aboriginal Art Co and in 2025, Gordon generously took on a mentoring role with Aboriginal Art Co, supporting artist Dean Tyson during the Safe Space Residency Program.

Gordon is a founding member of proppaNOW, the influential Brisbane-based collective that has reshaped conversations around what it means to be a contemporary Aboriginal artist. His work blends figurative characters, iconic symbols, comic-style text and vibrant colour to challenge power structures and cultural narratives with humour and clarity.

Gordon Hookey is represented by Milani Gallery.
