About this item

Rachel Bywaters, Acrylic, wax linen thread, L 20cm, W 11.5cm, D 0.5cm.

Rachel Bywaters is a K/Gamilaroi multidisciplinary artist living on Kabi Kabi Country. Working across printmaking, jewellery, sculpture, and installation, she brings a thoughtful and experimental approach to her practice. Rachel recently completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at Griffith University’s Queensland College of Art and Design, where she was awarded the CAIA Award for Excellence.

Rachel’s work is inspired by Gomeroi native grasses and their seeds, using these forms to explore themes of resistance, resilience, food sovereignty, and self-determination. Her bauble draws on imagery from her recent graduate show installation, Ganalay, The Bread of Life, which depicts country and plant kin as sacred through the visual language of a stained glass church window.

Alongside her creative practice, Rachel works as a Project Officer at Aboriginal Art Co, supporting and engaging with the broader Indigenous arts community.
