About this item
Sam Harrison, Acrylic paint & paint pens, L 10cm, W 10cm, D 10cm.
Sam Harrison is a Brisbane-based artist and curator with cultural connection to the Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri peoples of Central NSW. Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) in 2018 at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Sam has worked in various creative roles, including as an exhibiting artist, curator, artist assistant, and arts educator for young adults with autism. He is particularly interested in exploring how art can shape urban environments, creating spaces that are healthy, inclusive, and engaging. Sam’s artistic practice offers a profound exploration of Australian identity, combining historical and contemporary narratives to reflect on the complexities of culture, belonging, and the future of society. Through his work, Sam not only reinterprets the national story but also creates a platform for dialogue about how we understand our collective identity in the present day. His emphasis on global interconnectedness highlights the ways in which Australia’s past and present intersect with broader, worldwide conversations. A pivotal moment in Sam's career was his time in the artist studio at Aboriginal Art Co., where he created SAFE, a solo exhibition that unfolded over six months. The space was offered to him with the support of free access and informal mentorship, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. This experience not only helped shape his artistic vision but also sparked the creation of the Safe Space Residency, an initiative designed to support emerging artists and provide a nurturing environment for creative exploration.
