About this item
Merindi Schreiber, Coconut hoops, foxtail seed, LED lights L 13cm, W 13cm, D 13cm.
Merindi is a multidisciplinary artist of Kuku Yalanji, English, and Irish descent. Her creative practice is deeply rooted in a passion for bringing songs, stories, language, and culture to children, particularly in ways that resonate with the next generation.
This year we were lucky enough to have Merindi travel down from north Queensland to participate in our children's program; Jarjum Art Weekend. Merindi performed and ran a special weaving workshop. Her bauble is made from raffia and coconut shell and has fairy lights inside!
YALANJI WUKURRIL (YALANJI WEAVE)
A joyous piece celebrating the Yalanji Weave and all things tropical with Yirril shell base, foxtail seed ornaments, topped off with a shimmer of shining lights and a delightful display of coconut hoops.
Grounded in a strong connection to her mother’s land, Kuku Yalanji (Mossman, North Queensland), Merindi's work is a celebration of language, culture, and history, often expressed through song. Her soulful, easy-listening music mixes reflect her dedication to educating and empowering through creative expression. Merindi has been involved in various community initiatives, performing at festivals, gatherings, corporate functions, and school-based programs, where she continues to share her cultural heritage and inspire others through the power of song.
