10. Bauble by RACHEL BYWATERS
About this item
Rachel Bywaters, hand-stitched screen printed kangaroo leather with hand-made string, L 9cm, W 7.5cm, D 7.5cm.
Rachel Bywaters is a proud descendant of the Gamilaroi peoples with mixed European ancestry.
A multidisciplinary artist, Rachel transitioned from a career in Community Services to pursue her passion for storytelling and creative expression, currently studying a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at Griffith University. Her work blends her mixed heritage and lived experiences, offering unique perspectives through contemporary cultural expression. At the core of her practice is her Gamilaroi identity as 'grass people,' using native grains and grasses to explore themes of resistance, resilience, food sovereignty, and self-determination. Through her art, Rachel honors the strength and endurance of her people, reflecting their ongoing journey for self-governance and cultural reclamation. We’re also excited to welcome Rachel who has recently joined the Aboriginal Art Co team as our new Project Officer. We’re thrilled to have her on board and know she’ll be a great asset in supporting our projects and artists moving forward.
