Cornelius Krieghoff was born in the Netherlands. He lived in Montreal and Quebec City, studied art in Paris, and also lived in the United States. He painted images of Canada in the 19th century. He painted landscapes which include images of Quebec City and the surrounding area. He also painted people, depicting the customs and traditions of indigenous people and the activities of French-Canadian settlers, including scenes of social celebration and winter festivities.
The original of this piece titled, “Officer’s Room in Montreal,” is located at the Royal Ontario Museum. It depicts a friend of the artist, A.A. Staunton, surrounded by natural and cultural objects which include some of Krieghoff’s own paintings.
