Gumshire is a family owned and operated farm. Our farm is located just out of Angaston nestled between the Gumtrees in the small town of Keyneton. our pigs are not free range, they are raised in straw based Eco shelters. We are unable to go free range as we are located in the middle of the Murray catchment zone.

As many of you are aware we started doing this for mainly our close family, friends and our community. We wanted people to know where and their meat was coming from and how it was produced. And that it was coming from happy, healthy pigs who are treated with the love and respect that they all deserve.

We raise all our pigs from start to finish, maintaining a closed herd to keep our pigs as healthy as possible and so they live a stress free life. We operate our own breeding programs to get the best results to mixing our own feed so we have control of what our pigs eat. We source all our grain from all our local cereal farmers who use our pig manure to fertilize there crops throughout the year.

At Gumshire our team prides themselves on the welfare of our animals. yes our pigs run, play and show there natural personalities in our straw based Eco shelters but they are happy. On a daily bases you will find us showing positive interactions with our pigs right from birth. Each one of our breeding sows has their own unique personality from the ones who love a cuddle or a ear rub or the ones who prefer to just come up and say hello or the ones who are that little bit upper class and snobby and like their own space.

At Gumshire we have a range of different breeds.

Large White, Landrace, Duroc & Hampshire.

Our Hampshire’s are unique in that we are the only Hampshire breeder in South Australia and there are very few in the country. They are a slower growing breed which adds flavour and marbling to the meat which gives you that melt in your mouth sensation.

OUR ECO SHELTERS

What is a Eco Shelter?

A Eco Shelter is a big white dome shed which allows natural ventilation to flow through the shed and freedom for the pigs to run around in. The shed’s are filled with straw for burrowing & sleeping. They are equipped with big feeders which allows the pigs to eat as much as they like when they like as well as water troughs and sprinklers for drinking and cooling down.

One advantage with a Eco Shelter is it keeps the pigs out of the sun which prevents the pigs from getting sun burnt but at the same time they are getting that natural ventilation and freedom. Pigs can not sweat so therefore they burn really easy.

The Eco Shelters allow us to run our pigs as natural as possible in a friendly and happy environment.
