Inspired by Auguste Rodin’s 1880 famous bronze sculpture, The Thinker, artist Amanda Parer has created Man.
An artwork for our times. In contrast to Rodin’s representation of the ideal man, Parer’s Man is a little bewildered and bloated. He is reflecting on the over-indulgences and effect of contemporary society’s unrealistic and ultimately detrimental expectations on the world.
“What Man is really contemplating is what went wrong. This work is my response to living in a society that is simply overdoing everything. We in the 21st century find ourselves overwhelmed and constantly grappling with how we can begin to ameliorate the problems of the world that we have created.” – Amanda Parer
This photograph was taken in 2016, in the Cataract Gorge, Launceston Tasmania for the annual arts festival MONA FOMA.
