In this online class, you will learn how to understand the vital parts of a weather forecast so you know what to expect and how to prepare. You’ll discover the science behind weather systems, become familiar with the specifics of Salish Sea weather patterns, hone your observational skills, and gain tools and resources for obtaining weather information. 

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

  • understand the basics of global weather patterns
  • interpret atmospheric pressure, fronts, and other weather data
  • be familiar with the correlation between wind and sea state
  • understand specifics of Salish Sea weather patterns
  • know which tools are valuable for weather observation
  • access resources for obtaining weather information

Your Instructor:

Robert Reeder drives passenger ferries for a living, and tiny sailboats for fun. His first maritime job was aboard US Navy submarines, and he has since worked on everything from containers ships to tankers to tugboats.

Robert teaches weather and navigation at Seattle Maritime Academy and other maritime schools in the Seattle area. He lives with his lovely family near Alki Point, and writes and blogs about astronomy and spaceflight in all of his free time.
