"Beat" by Brett McMahon was the 2020 HMRI Art Series artwork, created and inspired by the work of the 2020 HMRI Researcher of the Year Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin.

Meeting with Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin was a real pleasure. The discussion that took place was fluid and wide-ranging, with Professor Lambkin outlining her research and prospective projects, and finding links between the creativity needed to develop innovative research and that required of explorative art-making.
After reflecting on our discussion, my response started to coalesce around the idea of rhythm – rhythm of a heartbeat, a breath, rhythm of a day. There is always variation either from circumstance or desire, but a level of consistency in the cycles of our lives contributes to a sense of stable sustainability.

Originally the work was to be in my signature colouration of blacks and silvers, but Professor Lambkin’s enthusiasm and vibrant intelligence drew me to use a far more active palette. The finished work, titled ‘Beat’, pulses with energy, colour and repeating marks, barely contained by the square format of the canvas support, a visual metaphor for the rhythms of life.
