Max Adrian is a visual artist who playfully considers queerness, desire, and consumerism ideas. His practice combines a bold aesthetic with an intricate process of sewn piecework using tactile materials like faux fur, pleather, and nylon ripstop. Such materials are highly manufactured—arguably toxic—yet they speak to vast associations of play, performance, and comfort. Adrian’s work pulls from these associations with references to quilts and bouncy castles, drag queens and puppet shows, fetish wear, and pet furniture. The resulting objects are social lubricators that challenge expectations of pleasure or fulfillment within a culture of constant consumption.
Max Adrian holds an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia. He received a BFA in Fiber and Creative Writing from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2015. Adrian was recently a 2022 Career Advancement Fellow with the Center for Craft. Recent exhibition history includes shows at Skylab Gallery (Columbus, OH), Ditch Projects (Springfield, OR), the Charlotte Street Foundation (Kansas City, MO), and the Iridian Gallery (Richmond, VA). Adrian’s practice has been supported by residencies and fellowships including the Vermont Studio Center, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Lighthouse Works, and Millay Arts, among others. He is based in Columbus, Ohio. www.maxadrian.com
