"Experimentation and a mix of humble materials guide my sculptural forms. Environmental concerns and women’s issues are central to my practice.

By imploring a hunter/gatherer style in both urban/rural settings, it provides a strong connection to place and a new purpose for reusable materials. The process is part alchemist/part witches brew, laborious and repetitious.

Oscillating between strength and fragility, nature and industry, decay and beauty — my artwork contains skilled-craftsmanship and the reckless abandonment of allowing materials to shape the outcome."

This playful and colorful piece is an homage to Bryant Holsenbeck, a renowned environmental artist who specializes in found- and recycled-object animal sculpture and Arrowmont Instructor.

Nicole Uzzell is a North Carolina-based sculptor who works primarily with handmade paper. She studied handbuilding under Lana Wilson at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and Cristina Cordova at Penland School of Craft. Received MFA in sculpture from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA. She exhibits from Winston-Salem to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Brooklyn, New York, and is on the ceramics faculty at Sawtooth School for Visual Art.
