Memory of Trees

I am submitting a series of trees taken in 2020 and 2021 with a Polaroid 104 camera and expired films. The trees look fragile and solid at the same time. They look stable and threatened. A feeling that I share, having been recently diagnosed with Parkinson Disease (PD), even though the illness will not affect my work for many years. The photographs were scanned a 300 bpi. Made with expired Polaroid film, image definition is low; I enhanced colors and contrast to an “unreal” level. When extracting the expired film from the camera, chemicals are unevenly distributed, leaving undeveloped areas; “damaged” emulsion enhancing the fragility feeling.

About the artist

I studied at Concordia University in Montreal in Photography, Studio Arts and Art History (1980-83). I have done contract work for magazines (Décoration Chez-Soi, Les idées de ma maison, Nos Animaux. I did studio and darkroom work. I was the official photographer of the Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal in 1981-82; an experience that allowed me to meet many international personalities in the film industry (Wenders, Jarmush, Duras and others). Some photos were published in 24 images and Cinema Canada. In the early 1980s, my interest in street photography (now called "author's photography") grew and evolved. I had a 40 years career in information technology while maintaining my passion for the image. Since my retirement, I went back to look at my photographic work. I am currently redefining and positioning my artistic vision through a series of projects.
