About this item

As part of a very involved Christmas present in 2017, JWA gifted staff with a DNA test, which generated much interest and prompted many members of the team to delve into their ancestry. People gave presentations as part of this process and from this came a larger story: this is who we are as Australians, this is who we are as a practice.

From this came an object representing our collective identity. The ‘upside down at the bottom of the world’ bowl was given to staff at the culmination of the year. It reflects the sentiments of D.H. Lawrence on his trip around Australia in 1922 signing off forlornly in his letters home with “D.H. Lawrence upside down at the bottom of the world”.

This unique ceramic bowl is designed by John Wardle in collaboration with artist Simon Lloyd.
