About this item

One of the traditions of John Wardle Architects is the annual staff Christmas present.  Over the years these gifts have taken many forms, frequently involving commissions for artists and artisans.  This present was designed by John after a particularly strenuous year for the practice.  The tray suggests a well earned rest – breakfast in bed.

The assembled piece combines the form of a computer keyboard morphing into a tray that folds into a book rest. Bowl, teacup and saucer, egg cup, vase and hand rest are all formed into the surface of the Victorian Mountain Ash.

Cabinet maker McKays Joinery who have a long association with the practice and are familiar with our design requests, were happy to fabricate the piece for us, including forming the 55 individual egg cups to go with each Breakfast in Bed tray.

To accompany the tray, a cup made by local ceramicist Sharon Alpren is included – a vessel for the first coffee or tea of the morning. Alpren first began working with clay in the Australian outback where she was influenced by the colours and forms of the surrounding landscape. Her work is known for its earthy palettes and textures.

Own a rare piece of John Wardle designed furniture, not commercially available.

The item will include the Breakfast in Bed Tray, a separate egg cup, tiny vase and cup by ceramicist Sharon Alpren.
