ARTIST BIO

J C Rathnayake was born in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka, and has graduated with an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo. His oeuvre has been defined by paintings that evoke a sense of calmness and serenity. Rathnayake is a multidisciplinary artist who experiments with a range of medium, and the interplay of texture and colours to create an aesthetic that is an extraordinary visual representation of pattern, repetition and rhythm.
 

CONCEPT

J C Rathnayake's contribution to the A4A fundraiser borrows its inspiration from his most recent solo Metamorphosis. In this series, the artist introduces fissures into the tranquil and meditative topography that has defined his style for over a decade. It probes an inquiry into the fickleness of human nature – its unpredictable tendency to change depending on the personal, social and political circumstances. It is a Kafkaesque take on the collective experience of trauma, the reactions and responses that emerged in the wake of the recent political and economic upheaval in Sri Lanka.
